ARWEN, aka Beatrice Zervas, is a German artist working across photography, digital art, painting and performance. Her research lies at the intersection of clinical psychology, ancient philosophy and contemporary visual experimentation. Her practice explores perception, identity and cultural memory, with particular attention to the symbolic and social role of femininity in a globalised world.

Trained as a clinical psychologist, Arwen takes an interdisciplinary approach to her work, transforming concepts related to the collective unconscious, mythology and the construction of the self into images of powerful aesthetic and emotional impact. Her methodology rests on a layered process: underwater photography, hand-painted sets, costumes designed by the artist and artificial intelligence interventions come together in a single symbolic narrative.

At the core of her work is the series Karyatiden. Hommage à Francesca Woodman. While the American photographer explored the fragility and dissolution of the female body, in Karyatiden Arwen reverses the perspective: her caryatids are not figures bowed under a weight, but contemporary goddesses, autonomous and mobile, immersed in an aquatic environment that cancels gravity and restores a sense of lightness and power to the body. Water becomes the site of metamorphosis: a suspended space in which physical and narrative laws loosen, allowing the figures to emerge as mythical, archetypal yet profoundly contemporary presences.

The reference to Greek philosophy — particularly Plato and the world of Forms — intertwines with the psychological dimension. At the heart of the project is transcendence: moving beyond visible reality to reach a deeper symbolic and psychological level. The artist describes it as a ‘shared dream’, a Nexus Somnia belonging to the collective unconscious. Her caryatids are therefore liminal figures, situated between myth and the present, between cultural memory and digital imagination.

The title DNA stems from the idea that the figures created by the artist are not simply representations, but original codes: symbolic matrices that pass through history and continue to shape contemporary identity. Her caryatids are genetic sequences of the Western imagination: archetypes that recur, mutate and become hybrids of the real and the digital, water and light, myth and psychology.

In this project, the figures are treated not as relics of the past, but as genetic matrices of our collective sensibility: foundational elements that survive in the visual memory of the West and that the artist reactivates through an immersive, multimedia language. DNA thus becomes an investigation into cultural transmission, into what we inherit without realising it, and into the ways the sacred continues to live in our gestures, our images and our inner narratives.

The artist’s creative process has a strong performative dimension: shoots take place in a specially designed water tank, where the models — her ‘goddesses’ — interact with physical and digital sets. Arwen describes this moment as a trance-like state, an experience of ‘Kairos’ in which intuition, technique and chance align.

Beatrice Zervas’s work has been presented internationally, including at World Art Dubai 2025, Spectrum Miami 2025 and in Athens, as well as in a trilogy of solo exhibitions in Italy under the title Pillars, hosted at Palazzo Arcieri (FAI) in San Mauro Forte, Palazzo Malvini Malvezzi in Matera and the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Potenza.
